Up for grabs

For the last 116 years, we’ve been looking after special places. The government’s planning reforms for England threaten green spaces that we all love. Not formal green belt and designated areas like National Parks but the two-thirds of countryside that isn’t protected.

The reforms deliberately skew the system in favour of economic growth. We support growth – but not at all costs. Longer-term, the reforms mean treasured green spaces on the edges of towns and villages disappearing under concrete. Once these spaces are gone, they’re gone for ever. Good planning should protect the environment, look after people’s welfare, as well as promote economic growth.

National Trust wants to get 100,000 signatures to persuade the government to change their perusal, and to preserve our countryside.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION IF YOU CARE ABOUT OUR COUNTRYSIDE!

We did it!!

The chamber is all but finished, apart from one or two little tweaks!

Here's a sneak peek!

Don't forget the grand opening on Friday the 22nd of April.

Tuesday 19 April 2011

The end is nigh...

Well maybe not quite, BUT, the new visitor experience here at Sutton Hoo is nearly ready!

Within a matter of a few days, you will finally be able to step back in time, back 1400 years, to the night of the Warrior King’s burial…

Only a privileged few may enter the King’s final resting place. Only kings, elders and favoured thanes may walk by the King and pay their respects.

You are one of those few….

As you walk through his burial chamber, offering your gift you him, you will see Rædwald buried with the rich regalia and beautiful objects that will ensure he is welcomed by his god, Woden, in Valhalla, Hall of Heroes.

Walking by the King, you smell the candles burning and hear fire crackling. You smell the wood of the boat, the smell of freshly dug earth and of the rich food offerings.

Come along to the official launch day on
Friday, April 22nd
and pay your respects!

Soil and Roof

The soil surround has now went in around our burial chamber. Its now starting to all come together!

The roof is now well underway too, and we have started to do our set design!

Off course, you wont be expected to jump over the saw horse to get inside!

The King's Head....No, not the pub!

Drum roll please!

Well here it is, the first image of the new king's head here at Sutton Hoo!

OK, it might not look like much at the moment, but once he's had his make over, and some hair and a beard, he's going to look amazing!

Remember, you can visit Sutton Hoo and watch the transformation of the king's final resting place, and to talk to our volunteers about the project as it happens.

The art of wall building

Well today the builders started to build the 3 supporting walls underneath the burial chamber.

They didn’t hang about and managed to get them built within a matter of a few hours! All we have to do now is let the walls dry and we can rest the boat on its footings and that means we can carry on with the rest of the building work.

Why not come and see the work in progress and chat with our volunteers about the project!

On the count of 3...

Today marked the start of our building project, with the builders lifting our burial chamber using the jack and pack method. For those of you who don’t know what that means (we didn’t either until today!), the burial chamber was lifted using jacks, with the space between the floor and the underside of the boat being filled or packed, using breeze blocks.
It was a fantastic day, with the media in attendance, and lots of interviews and photographs being taken.

Don’t forget, we are open to the public from Wednesdays to Sundays, so why not come down and look at the fascinating work that’s taking place and watch the National Trust in action!

Monday 21 March 2011

The builders are in!

Work got under way this morning for our new and exciting project at Sutton Hoo.

Soon you will be able to step inside the royal burial chamber and experience the mystery and magic of the king’s final resting place. You will be able to pay homage to King Raedwald and experience the sounds and smells of the past and discover the incredible story of the death of this legendary Anglo-Saxon warrior king.

Why not come and see the work in progress and chat with our volunteers about the project!

Friday 18 March 2011

Something’s stirring under the burial chamber…

Workmen have been seen inspecting under the royal burial chamber in preparation for some exciting changes that are coming to Sutton Hoo in the next few weeks.

You can follow our updates for what’s happening on our blog page, or our twitter account (links at the top of the page).
The whole project kicks off on Tuesday (22nd March) with a press event, and then on Wednesday we open our doors to the public to find out what’s going on…
So why not come down and see the work as it happens and talk to our wonderful volunteers about the project!
