Flooring support

The supports around the edge of the burial chamber have went in.

This will support the flooring that's going to run around the edge. After all, we don't want any one falling into the hole!

Don't forget to come down to Sutton Hoo and see the progress!

The King's Head....No, not the pub!

Drum roll please!

Well here it is, the first image of the new king's head here at Sutton Hoo!

OK, it might not look like much at the moment, but once he's had his make over, and some hair and a beard, he's going to look amazing!

Remember, you can visit Sutton Hoo and watch the transformation of the king's final resting place, and to talk to our volunteers about the project as it happens.

The art of wall building

Well today the builders started to build the 3 supporting walls underneath the burial chamber.

They didn’t hang about and managed to get them built within a matter of a few hours! All we have to do now is let the walls dry and we can rest the boat on its footings and that means we can carry on with the rest of the building work.

Why not come and see the work in progress and chat with our volunteers about the project!

On the count of 3...

Today marked the start of our building project, with the builders lifting our burial chamber using the jack and pack method. For those of you who don’t know what that means (we didn’t either until today!), the burial chamber was lifted using jacks, with the space between the floor and the underside of the boat being filled or packed, using breeze blocks.
It was a fantastic day, with the media in attendance, and lots of interviews and photographs being taken.

Don’t forget, we are open to the public from Wednesdays to Sundays, so why not come down and look at the fascinating work that’s taking place and watch the National Trust in action!
